Fire Hydrant Testing- Chanute

04/16/2018 @ 8:00 am - 5:00 pm

The Chanute Fire Department will be performing annual fire hydrant testing from April 16th, 2018 through July 2, 2018.  Chanute firefighters will inspect and test static, residual pressures and flow rate of each of Chanute’s nearly 500 hydrants to ensure that they work properly in the event they are needed.

Residents may notice the following conditions during testing:

  • Drop in water pressure
  • Slight discoloration of the water
  • If citizens notice any discoloration, they are encouraged to open a faucet for a brief period of time until the water runs clear.

Why testing is important:

Testing and recording new valuesSome trucks are able to pump at a rate that exceeds what some hydrants can provide so each hydrant is tested and values are recorded. This helps prevent damage to the hydrant or the truck and equipment.Pressure and new rate testing ensures that adequate water supply. Maintaining adequate water supply can help reduce insurance rates.Flushes sediments from water main pipes and helps enhance water quality.

Any questions about this Annual Testing should be addressed to the Public Works Complex at 620-431-5250

or the Chanute Fire Department at 620-431-5236.
